Five Days of Food Fun – Day 4

Five Days of Food Fun – Day 4

We often tell our kids not to play with their food, but this week is an exception!

With the school holidays upon us, every day for the next five days I will be posting a food-based activity that your children can do to beat the “boredom”! Each activity is different, and involves using food, but doesn’t necessarily involve eating food! Check in each day to see what the new activity is!

Day 4 – Food Experiment

You will need:

2 glasses filled with water

2 different food colours (we used red and blue)

2 Chinese cabbage leaves

Step 1: Fill each glass with water.

Step 2: Add around 5-10 drops of food colouring to each glass – one glass with blue and one glass with red.

Step 3: Place a cabbage leaf in each glass.

Step 4: Allow the cabbage leaves to sit in each glass of coloured water overnight, and in the morning let your kids marvel at the coloured cabbage leaves that show how each leaf has absorbed the water.

This is a great activity to show kids how plants absorb water and nutrients. It is a fantastic conversation starter when discussing the paddock to plate process of fruit and vegetables, as children can gain an understanding of how food grows.
